Vice-Rector: External Relations at The University of the Free State (UFS)

The University of the Free State (UFS) with its Main Campus in Bloemfontein, the judicial capital of South Africa  and in the heart of the country, is one of the oldest South African institutions of higher learning. Our two other campuses are the vibrant Qwaqwa Campus in the Eastern Free State and the smaller South Campus in Bloemfontein.

With the appointment of Prof. Jonathan Jansen as Vice-Chancellor and Rector on 1 July 2009, we entered a new, dynamic era. He is not only determined to lead the institution to become one of the best universities in the world; but also to distinguish our university from other universities. Prof. Jansen brings with him a new vision for the UFS and for the first time our university is poised to take a leading role in higher education in South Africa .
POSITIONS

Our university is a multicultural, parallel-medium (English and Afrikaans) institution with a history intertwined with that of the Free State and South Africa  and, to a growing extent, Africa and the rest of the world.

A full range of undergraduate  and postgraduate degrees and diplomas are offered in seven faculties to more than 33 000 students, of which 28 186 students are studying on the Bloemfontein Campus, 874 on the South Campus and 4 260 on the Qwaqwa Campus. A total of 2 900 staff members are working on all three campuses.

Duties and responsibilities:

    Participate in the shared executive leadership of the University.
    Ensure sound relations between stakeholders and the UFS in order to promote broader community engagement and partnerships.
    Promote and develop relationships with key role-players at all levels of government, business and the diplomatic corps.
    Enhance the standing of the UFS among leading universities in South Africa, the SADC and the rest of the African continent.
    Build and maintain partnerships with leading international universities.
    Represent the UFS at regional, national and international levels in higher education structures/ organisations.
    Provide executive leadership for UFS transformation initiatives, which includes the UFS EE programme.

Inherent requirements:

    An appropriate doctoral degree.
    Extensive experience (5 years) related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
    Demonstrated evidence of engagement in academic leadership.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

    The ability to participate in the leadership activities/processes of an institution of higher education.
    Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community, including internal and external stakeholders.
    Knowledge and understanding of the transformational challenges facing public higher education institutions.
    Knowledge of policy and legislative imperatives impacting on the environment of public higher education institutions.
    Ability to excel in situations requiring diplomacy and negotiating skills.
    Knowledge of and experience in the acquisition and management of corporate and governmental grants (local and foreign).

Term of office:

Five years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further term.

Assumption of duties:

1 April 2012, or as soon as possible
